A Call to Heal
Not many people know this about me: while travelling through Mexico, I met a spiritual teacher from New Zealand who invited me to help him set up a spiritual retreat centre in a remote valley on the North Island. It was an unexpected opportunity, but I trusted my intuition and said yes. At that point, I had always been drawn to personal growth and exploring higher states of consciousness – yoga had been my main practice for years – but this invitation opened a new door, one that unknowingly aligned me with my true purpose: helping others heal.
When I arrived in New Zealand at ‘Discovery Centre’, I had no idea who I was as a healer. Together with the teacher – who later became my partner – we built and ran the centre for several years, a place whose focus was personal discovery and heart healing and transformation through connecting to higher consciousness. From the very beginning, I threw myself into the work, devouring training programmes, learning from him, and soaking up every moment with the people who visited or stayed with us at the centre. It all came so naturally, yet beneath it all I carried a quiet self-doubt. I struggled to believe in myself, to fully value my abilities, or to own them with confidence.
An Unexpected Visitor
One day, quite early on in my time at the centre – before I’d even started charging for sessions – I received a huge life lesson that revealed I was a natural healer.
I was alone at the centre when a woman arrived unexpectedly, having driven 90 minutes from Wellington with her 80-year-old mother. They were desperate for help. Her mother had cancer and had been living with chronic pain for two years. She had tried everything – doctors, specialists, alternative therapies – but nothing brought relief.
Her need for a session far outweighed my nervousness, unpreparedness and self-doubt. So I invited her to lie down, asked her to share her intentions, and guided her into a deep state of relaxation. At that time, the sessions I had been trained in involved simply channelling Source energy – pure love, in its highest frequency – and allowing it to go where it was most needed. There was no dialogue, only trust and presence.
A Profound Shift
Halfway through the session, I noticed something extraordinary. The tension on her face softened, the lines of pain eased, and a lightness seemed to fill the room. A smile touched her lips, and tears streamed from her closed eyes. I knew something profound was happening.
When I gently brought her back to full awareness, she told me that halfway through the session, all her pain had vanished. For the first time in years, she felt free.
It was a deeply moving and humbling moment. I was as astonished as she was. How could this be? I didn’t fully understand, but I knew it was real.
She left pain-free that day to drive home with her daughter. A few months later, her daughter returned to the centre, carrying a bouquet of flowers. She came to thank me and to share the bittersweet news that her mother had passed away peacefully, three weeks after our session. The pain had never returned. Those final weeks were spent with her loved ones, present and comfortable, free from suffering.
The Deeper Lesson
When I first heard the news of her passing, I was shocked. My training had never prepared me for this outcome. For a moment, I wondered if what I had done could have caused harm. But her daughter’s words and gratitude told a different story. Her mum’s final weeks had been free of pain, filled with presence and peace. This was the real gift.
That moment taught me something profound: we are always learning from every client. Healing is never a one-way flow of energy from practitioner to client, and it is never me “doing the healing.” My role is to hold space, to use my energy and intent to help someone access their own healing ability. It is a partnership between the client, myself, and Source – the universal energy that connects us all. And because of that, each session leaves us both changed and touched.
Finding My Calling
That experience happened nearly thirty years ago, and it became the catalyst for my journey as a healer, therapist, breathworker, and transformation coach. It showed me, beyond doubt, that this was my path.
Despite that, over the years, I have been pulled off track many times – by lack of clarity, by not believing that I could do this effortless, enjoyable and fulfilling work – and be paid for it, by taking the more ‘sensible’ route as a graphic designer, or worrying about being judged as too ‘woo-woo’ and flaky.
But perhaps the deepest block has been something far older: the inherited fear of persecution carried in my DNA. This is what many now call the witch wound – a collective trauma passed down through generations of women who were healers, midwives, herbalists, or simply women who stood out.
For nearly 400 years, suspicion and fear led to the torture and execution of countless women, often for nothing more than their beauty, independence, or intuition. Women denounced women; communities turned against their own. It was not safe to be seen, let alone to stand as a healer connected to the unseen. And though those events ended some 275 years ago, the echoes still reverberate. That unconscious, epigenetic fear – buried but very real – can feel like life or death when we dare to step into our gifts.
Even with these inherited fears and the many moments I’ve questioned or sabotaged myself, something has always called me back. Each time I work with a client, I feel completely in my element – exactly where I am meant to be.
